Emergency measures are being planned at ports to prevent feared fresh food shortages in British supermarket chains as a result of Brexit. Plans include allowing empty lorries to skip queues at key ports to expedite their return from the UK to the EU to speed up restocking with supplies. Such a scheme could see up to 300 lorries being fast-tracked outside Dover and Folkstone for the largest supermarkets only. Supermarkets are already reporting gaps on the shelves in fresh produce aisles whilst industry bodies have highlighted that the new Brexit agreement is ‘pretty much unworkable’, leaving the fresh food supply chain seriously at risk of disruption.
