New AI application predicts and reduces risk of crown rot in bananas

Delegates at Cool Logistics Global 2021 heard from the team at AgroFair and AI specialist Theofrastos Mantadelis, the founder of dimetra.eu. Theo built a new AI application to both predict and reduce the risk of crown rot in bananas. The new model has accuracy of 96%. Early results from Peru are very positive – with a 50% reduction of crown rot on arrival.

Food waste is big news. On day 2 of Cool Logistics Global 2021 our panel discussed how to prolong fresh produce quality. Andy Connell moderated our panel and was joined by Deirdre Holcroft of Holcroft Postharvest Consulting and Eelke Westra of Wageningen University. In order to tackle food waste efficiently, the entire food chain must be considered. In addition, consumers should be aware of their food waste. Logistics providers need to understand what happens at the farm level.

That was the view shared by the experts on our Digitalisation panel at Cool Logistics Global 2021, from 19 to 21 October. Thomas Bagge of the DCSA,  André Simha of MSC, Gadi Ruschin of WAVE BL and Fabiano Luciani and Fabio Poyer, both of BRF, were moderated by Mark Bennett of Sun International. EBLs are ‘shaping the future of shipping’ according to Simha.

Day two of Cool Logistics Global took place online on 20 October. Our focus was on global ports and refrigerated transport and our theme was ‘Cool Ports and Cold stores: Integrated Perishable hubs of the future’. We heard from Johannes Nanninga of Guangzhou Port, representing Port of Nansha, who spoke about the trends in the Chinese market. There are huge changes in consumer behaviour and growth in both exports and imports of perishables. Therefore Chinese refrigerated transport could grow by 100% in 2025.  Capt. Paul J. Gallie of A.P. Moller Capital discussed investment into ports in developing countries.  Ole Schack-Petersen of Broom Group outlined the company’s services. Anne Saris of Port of Rotterdam spoke about the growth of agrofood and cold storage at the port.

Cool Logistics Global 2021 took place from 19 – 21 October and our second session on day one included discussion on port delays.  Our panel of Sarah Schlueter of Hapag-Lloyd, Robert Sappio of SeaCube Containers, Andrew Lorimer of Datamar and Diego Barriga of Lancaster and Foodcareplus all agreed that congestion rather than container shortages is in fact the major cause of the delays. Perishable products in particular are often considered low value, despite high logistical costs.
