
The container sector will play its part in global vaccine logistics, but it has some work to do first in order to demonstrate its reliability and availability of appropriate technology, according to the some of the panelists who spoke at our recent online seminar Containing COVID-19: Containerisation’s Role in Global Vaccine Logistics.
Countries looking to cut the cost of vaccine distribution will increasingly look to ocean freight as an alternative to costly air freight. Those vaccines that can be transported in standard refrigeration units will be ideal candidates for ocean transportation.
However detailed visibility data will be required to maintain quality assurance.
Panelists from Maersk, DHL Global Forwarding, PSA International and the World Economic Forum agreed that maritime transport would be adopted for COVID-19 vaccine transportation, but that this would be a gradual roll-out, dependent upon many factors.
