Cool News and Views – July

Editor's Welcome - July 2021

At this half way point in 2021, the cold chain and perishable cargoes market is as active as ever.

It is now several weeks on from the Suez Canal blockage and the problems at Yantian port. Disruption to the global maritime supply chain continues. Freight rates are rising, container capacity is tight and the movement of goods to and from Asia is challenging.

The overall outlook for the global cold chain market is positive with increased demand for cold chain logistics from the processed food and pharmaceuticals sectors in particular.

Last month we reported that British farmers and fresh produce exporters face extreme challenges: a triple impact of Brexit, labour shortages due to COVID and a severe shortage of lorry capacity. Sadly, this has left fresh produce discarded and rotting and the situation is worsening.

Our headline story this month is the latest blog from ORBCOMM: Smart Reefer Containers – Why Interoperability Matters. Visibility of vital cargoes in transit at sea in refrigerated containers is now more important than ever.  Head over to the ORBCOMM blog page and read more.
