Brazilian fruit exports face tight container supply

Brazilian fruit exporters, who were already experiencing difficulties in shipments caused by the pandemic, have had an additional headache since the ship Ever Given ran aground in Egypt’s Suez Canal in March

The grounding of the Ever Given in the Suez Canal has aggravated the shortage of reefer containers that Brazilian fruit exporters were already facing. With demand greater than can be met by supply at Brazilian ports, fruit exporters are facing ongoing problems that are expected to last until the end of 2021.

Fusarium TR4 has now been detected in three Latin American countries and Andean banana-producing nations are backing Global Alliance Against TR4 to work together to combat this deadly disease.

TR4 is the greatest threat to the banana industry ever seen and without coordinated efforts to combat the disease, banana crops that provide a vital food source for over 400m people globally could be at risk.

The Alliance’s actions are based on three fronts: prevention and training, genetic improvement and control methods.
