Abu Dhabi port has acquired a fleet of specialised refrigerated vehicles to boost its local final-mile vaccine delivery to over 1 million doses per day, in support of the work by the Hope Consortium.

The vehicles are connected to Maqta Gateway’s digital blockchain-enabled solution “mUnity,”  which means the journey of vaccines is tracked through the supply chain in real-time, ensuring safe, transparent and efficient product delivery to any location.

Drewry’s latest Reefer Shipping Forecaster predicts tight availability of reefer containers for some time to come and the recovery in seaborne perishables trade is expected to be muted this year by the Fusarium TR4 disease afflicting banana production.

Recovery in seaborne reefer traffic is expected to be limited to 2.7% in 2021.

Shipping lines can’t cope with booming perishables trade

According to shipping consultancy group Drewry, shipping lines are “far from coping” with the seasonal demands of perishables.

Reefer container freight rates are soaring, but shipping lines still can’t cope with the seasonal demands of perishables, according to shipping consultancy group Drewry.

With a big uptick in seasonal cargo demand together with rising bunker charges,  a weighted average of rates across the top 15 “reefer-intensive” tradelanes jumped 26% in the first quarter, reported Drewry.

Tight container supply is adding to the problem and despite record reefer production levels, container shortages are expected to continue beyond 2021.

For customers, this presents a very challenging scenario.
